Course Description

Continued clinical application of Polysomnographic testing at an affiliated sleep disorder center. Includes patient interaction, application of testing equipment, and monitoring sleep behavior. PREREQUISITE: PSG A175. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. The outcome for this clinical experience will prepare students for the internship clinical in the Spring.
  2. Setup patients with appropriate electrodes and sensors in 60 minutes, take valid patient data, perform equipment and patient calibrations, initiate and record an all-night Polysomnographic study and identify 50% of artifacts and 75% of normal sleep activity.

  • I. 2. Adhere to appropriate dress code, being neat, well groomed, appropriate for clinical and adhering to Orange Coast College catalog policy for student conduct.
  • I. 3. Assume responsibility for notifying the department supervisor when unable to attend or when expected to be late.

  • I. 5. Assume responsibility for arriving to clinical on time and must stay allotted time per the lab schedule.

  • II. 1. Calibrate the machine within 100% accuracy. Make all necessary adjustment to the instrument for accurate recordings.
  • II. 2. Learn the lab protocol within the third week.
  • II. 3. Make a written summary of valid patient data.
  • II. 4. Apply electrodes accurately within 60 minutes.
  • II. 5. Use appropriate machine settings to provide optimal recording as necessary.
  • II. 6. Identify and monitor artifacts with 50% accuracy.
  • II. 7. Identify normal sleep polygraph activity with 75% accuracy.

Lecture Content

This is the second in a series of clinical rotations which will provide an opportunity to practice Polysomnographic testing on patients at a designated affiliated sleep disorder center.  Students will be expected to observe and to perform Polysomnography testing on clinical patients, maintain laboratory records and take patient history information.   This clinical will require ten hours per week of clinical practice, excluding holidays. The outcome for this clinical experience will prepare the student for the summer clinical internship. The goals for this rotation are for you to be able to: Set up patient monitoring equipment within 60 minutes.  This will provide increased hands on time to enhance both your proficiency, efficiency and confidence with Polysomnography equipment. Perform routine testing. Recognize normal Polysomnographic chart data activity and be able to recognize some basic abnormalities. The skills learned within this experience will be built upon in the clinical internship.

Instructional Techniques

Reading Assignments

1 - 2 hours per week Reading assignments from textbook.

Writing Assignments

Proficiency is demonstrated by evaluation of the stated objectives above.  Writing assignments are based on the clinical facility requirements and may include patient history taking, technical record evaluations, and technical and clinical notations on the PSG recording.

Out-of-class Assignments

1 - 2 hours per week Completing patient history and maintaining polysomnography records

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will be evaluated according to the objectives stated both mid-rotation and end rotation. Mid-rotation evaluation is done in order to encourage student s good performance, identify areas of improvement, and assess student progress. Polysomnography A265 is a credit/no-credit course. A grade of 'CR' or better is required to pass. A grade of 'NC' will be issued for students who have not completed all required clinical hours at the end of the rotation. Grades issued:'CR' - Meets or surpasses all objectives'NC' - Fails to meet objectivesAttendance: It is the student responsibility to notify the department in a timely manner if unable to attend or expected to be late. The student is required to arrive on time and stay the allotted time per the lab schedule. Any time lost due to absence or tardiness MUST be made up during that clinical rotation. Each clinical shift is 12 hours. (Clinical will recognize designated school holidays.) If a student wishes to stay more than the allotted hours, and the clinical can accommodate, this is encouraged but cannot be used for an additional shift. Students may be removed from a clinical site, which may result in failing clinical for the following: Excessive absences Excessive tardiness Endangering a patient Direct insubordination Inappropriate dress or behavior If there is an extended period of absence due to circumstances outside student control (illness, hospitalization, crisis) details must be worked out with the clinical coordinator and the clinical site.

Diagnostic medical technology-diagnostic medical sonography, neurodiagnosti...: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
