Course Description

Clinical application of Polysomnographic testing at an affiliated sleep disorder center to include patient interaction, application of testing equipment, and monitoring sleep behavior. PREREQUISITE: PSG A165. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

Setup patients with appropriate electrodes and sensors in 60 minutes, take valid patient data, perform equipment and patient calibrations, initiate an all-night Polysomnographic study and identify 35% of artifacts and 65% of normal sleep activity.

Course Objectives

II. 1. Calibrate the machine within 75% accuracy.
II. 2. Perform the lab protocol within the third week.

II. 4. Apply EEG electrodes and body leads accurately within 75 minutes.
II. 5. Use appropriate machine settings to provide optimal recording as necessary.
II. 6. Identify and monitor artifacts with 35% accuracy.
II. 7. Identify normal sleep polygraph activity with 65% accuracy.

Instructional Techniques

This is a clinical course which will provide students an opportunity practice Polysomnographic testing on patients at a designated affiliated sleep disorder center. Students will be expected to observe and to perform PSG testing on clinical patients, maintain laboratory records and take patients history information.

Reading Assignments

Review the AASM Scoring Manual for performing routine Polysomnography exam. (1 hour/week)

Writing Assignments

Written reports on patient assessments, medical history, and record keeping per lab protocol. Mid-Clinical Self Evaluation to be completed during course hours.

Out-of-class Assignments

Complete daily reports/documentation in procedure logs and attendance logs if not completed during clinical hours (0.5 hrs/week).

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Student will be evaluated according to the objectives stated both mid-rotation and end rotation. Mid-rotation evaluation is done in order to encourage student s good performance, identify areas of improvement, and assess student progress. PSG A175 is a credit/no credit course. A grade of CR is required to pass. A grade of NC will be issued for students who have not completed all required clinical hours* at the end of the rotation. Grades issued: CR - Meets or surpasses all objectives NC - Fails to meet objectives Attendance: It is the student s responsibility to notify the department in a timely manner if unable to attend or expected to be late. The student is required to arrive on time and stay the allotted time per the lab schedule. Students are to treat the clinical experience like a job and take this area seriously. In addition, any time lost due to absence or tardiness must be made up during the clinical rotation. Each clinical shift is 12 hours. No more than 12 hours may be applied per shift worked. (i.e., if a student misses a day he/she must schedule a make-up time. Clinical will recognize designated school holidays. Students may be removed from a clinical site, which may result in failing clinical for the following: Excessive absences Excessive tardiness Endangering a patient Direct insubordination Inappropriate dress or behavior If there is an extended period of absence due to circumstances outside student control (illness, hospitalization, crisis) details must be worked out with the clinical coordinator and the clinical site.

Proficiency is demonstrated by evaluation of the stated objectives above. Writing assignments are based on the clinical facility requirements and may include patient history taking, technical record evaluation, and technical and clinical notations on the PSG recording.
