Course Description

Introductory course in shooting techniques and photographic management methods necessary for successful travel photography. Basic skills such as shooting night scenes and scenic panoramas, and using professional effects to take more accomplished interior and exterior photographs will be covered. Includes brief history of the digital camera and discussion of some basic computer, printer, or publishing output options as well as suggestions for simple image manipulation. Student shall provide own digital camera. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Given a scene or other image, assess which photographic techniques to employ to design a successful photograph.
2. Analyze and assess which photographic settings and professional shooting techniques to utilize in taking night, low light, or panoramic scenes.
3. Successfully design positive and negative shapes along with lighting to generate creatively composed original photographs.
4. Identify photographic management options and decide which would best organize data and then how that data could later be successfully modified and manipulated.
5. Demonstrate proficiency in shooting well planned, well lit, well constructed digital photographs and have a solid grasp of the workings of a digital camera.

Instructional Techniques

This course will be taught by lecturing both inside the classroom and also lecturing "on location" on fieldtrips where students will shoot buildings, dimly lit interiors, panoramic images and gain experience shooting photographs in diverse lighting. There will also be a nighttime fieldtrip so students can experience shooting in the ambient light found after dark.  The instructor will demonstrate the skills taught and also suggest outside reading, experimentation and further study.  By assigning specific projects and having a written exam, the instructor will be able to assess the success of the digital photography student.

Eligible Disciplines

Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
