Course Description

Faculty directed study into the conception, development, planning, and installation of a personal photographic exhibition. Instruction is offered at intermediate/advanced and advanced levels. Recommended for photography majors. Counts toward '200' level elective course requirement. PREREQUISITE: PHOT A264. Lab/Arranged Lab. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Edit and sequence a body of photographs for exhibition.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to effectively manage a photographic exhibition.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the many skills required for a personal photographic exhibition.
  • 2. Demonstrate the ability to sequence and install an exhibition.
  • 3. Demonstrate the ability to correctly pack artwork for safe transit.

Lab Content

1. Review of individual students knowledge of the area to be studied and goals to be achieved. 2. Developing and articulating an idea for the photography exhibition.  3. Developing effective time management strategies. 4. Editing the photographs to be included in the exhibition. 5. Sequencing photographs within the exhibition. 6. Exhibition design and installation concepts.  De-installing an exhibition.

Instructional Techniques

1. Individual and small group meetings with instructor. 2. Discussion and critique of work of work to be exhibited. 3. Assigned readings as appropriate.  4. Evaluation and critique of student ability to manage project . 5. Evaluation and critique of final exhibition.

Reading Assignments

Assigned readings as appropriate to individual project.

Writing Assignments

The student will write exhibition announcements and other promotional material.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will have outside assignments in the preparation and  evaluation of work for their exhibitions as well as in the sequencing of exhibition.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills in evaluating and editing the work to be included in their exhibition as well as in sequencing the project.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Practical skills, along with the ability to select and use the appropriate tools will be acquired and demonstrated during the hanging of their exhibition. The student will write and produce promotional materials for their exhibition.

Eligible Disciplines

Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
