Course Description

Faculty directed in-depth study of a specific area of art photography. Topic(s) and faculty chosen by the student. Instruction is offered at intermediate/advanced and advanced levels. Recommended for photography majors. Counts toward '200' level elective course requirement. PREREQUISITE: PHOT A260. Lab/Arranged Lab. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Demonstrate technical skills and creativity through the final form and content of an art photography portfolio.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Prepare an art photography portfolio.
  • 2. Demonstrate skill and creativity in a chosen specific area of the medium not currently available in existing courses.
  • 3. Prepare application for transfer to four year institutions or prepare for interviews with prospective employers.

Lab Content

1. Review of individual students current portfolio and aims. Topic(s), area of concentration and projects are determined by each student in consultation with the instructor, to achieve a finished portfolio. Instructor determines at which level student will work, i.e., intermediate/advanced or advanced. 2. Determination of content of portfolio to be worked on during semester, including a minimum of 10 completed items. Student provides a written proposal to be followed during the course. 3. Bi-weekly student/instructor conferences providing on-going critique and advice during semester. 4. Review and critique of completed coursework and portfolio by guiding instructor and at least one other member of OCC photography faculty.

Instructional Techniques

Individual and small group meetings with instructor. Discussion and critique of work in progress.  Evaluation and critique of final art portfolio.

Reading Assignments

Students will research based on individuals specific project needs.

Writing Assignments

Students will be assigned specific research assignments that will support, inform, and strengthen their projects.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will complete a number of specific assignments outside of class, based on the students objectives, that help direct the student toward the goal of creating a finished art portfolio.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills with the production of photographic projects, which will communicate visually, using technical skills, conceptual thought, and aesthetic ideas developed through the course that will serve to strengthen the images in the final portfolio.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will demonstrate problem solving and technical skills with the production of photographic imagery, building toward the final portfolio.

Eligible Disciplines

Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
