Course Description
Faculty directed study into the history, criticism, interpretation, literature, theory, or business of art photography, not involving any lab work. Topic(s) and faculty chosen by the student. Instruction is offered at intermediate levels. Recommended for photography majors. Counts toward '200' level elective course requirement. PREREQUISITE: PHOT A180. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Identify appropriate criteria for the evaluation, critique, and appraisal of his or her own photographic art work and that of other art photographers.
Course Objectives
- 1. Investigate and research transfer options for four year schools and/or gallery-based careers with an experience relevant to prospective employment.
- 2. Develop and demonstrate research skills and creative thinking in a specifically chosen area of critical analysis about art photography.

1. Review of individual students knowledge of the area to be studied and goals to be achieved. Topic (s) and projects are determined by each student for themselves, in consultation with the instructor, according to their own needs. 2. Determination of content of material to be studied and work to be completed during a semester; including a minimum ten page final paper. 3. Bi-weekly student/instructor conference providing ongoing critique and advice during the semester. 4. Review, evaluation, and critique of completed work by guiding instructor and at least one other member of OCC photography faculty.

Reading Assignments
Students will be given specific reading assignments to support the progression of the final project.
Writing Assignments
Students will be required to write a ten page final paper on a current topic pertaining to their project.
Out-of-class Assignments
Students will complete a number of photographic assignments that strengthen technical skill, visual communication, and conceptual ability, leading up to a final project.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Student will demonstrate critical thinking through outside photographic assignments, research, and a final project. Visual, conceptual thought processes and ideas will be developed duringing the course.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Students will demonstrate problem solving and technical skills with the production of photographic imagery and completion of the final project and a ten page final paper.
Eligible Disciplines
Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
