Course Description

Major course projects are the production of several unique photographic books. Layout, typography, editing of photos, and makeup of a book are covered. Attention will be paid to viewing and discussing a wide range of photographic bookworks. Instruction is offered at intermediate and advanced levels. Recommended for photography majors. PREREQUISITE: PHOT A125. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Generate content for photographic books by creating, editing, sequencing and relating photographic images and text.
  2. Formulate and execute a variety of bookmaking techniques to construct unique photographic books.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Evaluate the significance of the book format as a unique medium of creative expression.
  • 2. Identify subject matter that can be developed into bookwork.
  • 3. Develop an idea, plan and create images for bookworks.
  • 4. Demonstrate proficiency with analog and digital printing methods to produce high quality images.
  • 5. Edit a large body of photographs into a coherent whole.
  • 6. Sequence and organize groups of photographs into an integral whole that communicates a definite message/meaning/content.
  • 7. Demonstrate facility with a variety of bookbinding techniques.
  • 8. Produce a variety of completed books to solve expressive problems.

Lecture Content

Introductions:  "Book Anatomy." Slide lecture/demonstration:  "Images and Words." Examination of changes in image interpretation with alterations in accompanying text. Project with discussion.  Bring in one photo with two sets of words to go with it. Demonstration:  Simple binding techniques and layout. Slide lecture:  "Image Juxtapositions." Critique of:  "Images and Words."   Assignment examines the ways in which photos can be expressively combined with words and how words can affect the meaning of images. Demonstration:  "Image Juxtapositions." Project with discussion.  Bring images for use in demonstration. Slide lecture:  "Image Sequences." Critique of:  "Image Juxtapositions."   Assignment examines how two photos can interact to alter and expand the meanings they have as individual images. Demonstration:  "Image Sequences." Project with discussion.  Bring images for use in demonstration. Slide lectures:  "Classic Photo Bookworks from the History of Photography." Critique of:  "Image Sequences."   Assignment examines how a group of images arranged in a specific order can effect meaning, (for instance):  to present vast or many sided locations, objects, and events; or to trace evolving relationships; or to depict elapsed time; or to create visual narratives. Lectures:  Publishing. Review and discussion of course material. Critique of:  "Final Photo Bookwork."   Assignment:  Create a larger and more complete final photo bookwork using any of the techniques covered in the lectures, demonstrations, previous assignments, any combination of these techniques, or a new technique devised by the student.

Instructional Techniques

Lectures and slide-lectures to illustrate concepts. Demonstrations of technical applications. Individual exercises. Instructor and peer evaluation, critique, and feedback on work produced. Discussion

Reading Assignments

.Students will spend 1 hour/week reading handouts supplied by the instructor and studying examples of a variety of bookmaking strategies.

Writing Assignments

Students will spend 1 hour/week maintaining a written class journal, which is presented with the final photo bookwork and becomes their personal textbook. While not all finished books will contain text, many will.  Also, all students will complete projects combining text with images and will analyze the change in image interpretation with alterations in text.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will spend 5 hours/week creating creating photographic books that visually communicate conceptual and aesthetic concerns in response to lecture material.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Skills demonstration and completed books (85%); class participation (15%).

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Eligible Disciplines

Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
