Course Description
Aids students in the appreciation and critical analysis of contemporary art photography. Presentations and discussions provide background for weekly field-trips to museums and galleries in the Los Angeles area. Course content differs each semester due to the local exhibition calendar. Counts towards "100" level optional course requirement for Photography Certificate of Achievement. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives
- 1. Develop an aesthetic appreciation of fine art photography.
- 2. Distinguish the work of each individual photographer.
- 3. Discuss with accuracy a variety of common approaches to fine art photography.
- 4. Relate and compare the work of different photographers.
- 5. Explain the relationships and differences between contemporary photographers and their predecessors.
- 6. Restate verbally the ideas conveyed in each exhibition.
- 7. Recognize the style adopted by each photographer.
- 8. Recognize and apply current critical terms used in analyzing fine art photographs
Lecture Content
Field trips to galleries and museums to be determined each semester based on what is available at different locations.Instructor will preface each visit with a lecture on works to be seen. In the exhibition space the instructor will initiate discussion and answer student questions. In certain cases the artist or exhibition curator will give a gallery talk to the class.Lecture topics must coordinate with trips to include: Methods of appreciating, discussing and evaluating fine art photographs Information about gallery or museum Information about photographer(s) showing

Students will spend 1 hour per week reading from the textbook or additional readings assigned by the instructor.

Sudents will spend 1 hour per week researching asigned photographers in the library.

Eligible Disciplines
Photography: Masters degree in photography, fine arts, or art OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in art history or humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
