Course Description

Instruction and assistance with intermediate black & white laboratory, using 35mm, RC Papers, and camera projects. Students determine their own projects. This is a workshop course intended as, but not limited to, an augmentative laboratory course for those enrolled in certificate studio/production photography classes. Counts towards 100 level elective course requirement for Photography Certificate of Achievement. PREREQUISITE: PHOT A120, PHOT A120H, or PHOT A127. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Operate photographic lab equipment with proficiency.
2. Produce and evaluate a finished project utilizing 35mm film and Black and White printing on RC paper.

Course Objectives

• 1. Organize project workflow.
• 2. Select the appropriate black and white film.
• 3. Select the appropriate RC paper.
• 4. Read and diagnose exposure and development problems with in the negative.
• 5. Evaluate quality of negative making and B W printing results with RC paper.
• 6. Produce a finished project.

Projects to be determined by each student for themselves in consultation with the instructor. Instruction is offered one-on-one and in small groups in a hands-on way. Course content varies each semester with projects selected. Assistance will be offered in the following areas, according to students projects needs and will be addressed in every class meeting. 1. Selecting the proper 35mm film. ISO silver content structure 2. Selecting the proper RC paper Exposure index Silver content Surface 3. Instructional Techniques

Demonstrations of laboratory equipment. Demonstration of approaches to problem solving through one-on-one assistance. Handouts providing technical instructions and assistance. Discussion and critique of conceptual and aesthetic strategies in relationship to technical execution.

Reading assignments given as needed to inform a specific project.

Writing Assignments

Writing assignments are not required for this class.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will complete a specific number of photographic assignments to support and assist the individuals growth in traditional photographic lab practices.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Student will demonstrate critical thinking though using lab methodologies, and the successful completion of printing projects.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Evaluation of the students final print projects.

Eligible Disciplines

Photographic technology/commercial photography: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
