Course Description
This course focuses on the clinical experience and application of nursing care management for women, newborn and perinatal patients. The nursing process will be utilized as a tool to direct nursing care. A concept-based curriculum provides the structure of the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. PREREQUISITE: NURS G170, NURS G170C, NURS G295, and NURS G295C. COREQUISITE: NURS G175. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Apply the cultural needs of women, newborn and perinatal patients to provide safe evidence-based nursing care.
- Apply the nursing process to provide direct care to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of the women, newborn and perinatal patients with common health problems that adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards.
- Perform advanced psychomotor skills safely.
- Apply pathophysiology of common acute/chronic health problems of the women, newborn and perinatal patients to develop patient-centered collaborative plan care.
- Utilize information technology in collaboration with nursing and healthcare teams to facilitate communication and to coordinate patient care.
Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate cultural needs assessment on women, newborns, and perinatal using nursing judgment and evidence-based practice.
- 2. Demonstrate application of assessment findings for the identification of potential health problems to promote quality care.
- 3. Organize safe evidence-based nursing care, based on the nursing process framework, that is patient-centered and meets the patients physical and psychosocial needs.
- 4. Identify one clinical agency quality improvement activity in a community health care setting.
- 5. Demonstrate adherence to legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice to provide nursing care for the woman, newborn and perinatal patients.
- 6. Demonstrate patient-centered care while implementing advanced psychomotor skills according to the skills rubric
- 7. Demonstrate the application of patients pathophysiology as the basis for the development of a safe, evidence-based nursing process and patient care.
- 8. Utilize interdisciplinary collaboration teams when providing patient care for the woman, newborn and perinatal patients.
- 9. Use informatics and technology, including electronic health records, to collect and document patient care for the woman, newborn and perinatal patients.

Lab Content
A clinical evaluation tool is used to evaluate students performance during healthcare and community experiences. (See attachment) Healthcare and Community Experiences: Students experience hands-on activities weekly. Human Patient Simulation (HPS): Simulated scenarios enhance learning through directly relating theory to the clinical setting in an interactive environment. Nursing Education Simulation Technology (NEST) Center: Practice and demonstrate competence in nursing skills. Skills: Perform psychomotor skills and /or interventions for improved patient outcomes. Based on evidence-based practice and evaluated through the use of a skill rubric. Medication Administration: Oral, sublingual, rectal, transdermal, inhalational, topical, and injection routes: Subcutaneous, intramuscular, intradermal, and intravenous. Assessment and care Management: Demonstrate physical assessment of areas specific to womens health and perinatal care Antepartum: Assess fundal height, placement of a Doppler to assess fetal heart rate, calculate estimated due date Intrapartum: Participate in Labor and Delivery process, assist with comfort measures Postpartum: Provide care for post-vaginal and cesarean section delivery mothers such as comfort care. Application of ice pack, pericare, breast support, pain management provide education on contraceptive methods Newborn Assessment and Care Management: Perform APGAR score immediately after birth Participate in newborn care Provide newborn care education to mothers/family members

Nursing science/clinical practice: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
