Course Description

This course focuses on care of the healthy individual across the lifespan to meet physical and psychosocial health needs. Students will learn how to safely perform foundational nursing clinical skills, including physical assessment and safe medication administration. The nursing process will be utilized as the framework for patient-centered nursing care. Concept-based curriculum provides the structure of the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. Practice in the college laboratory and clinical experience in acute health care and/or community settings is required. Permission is required to enroll in the course. PREREQUISITE: PSYC G118, COMM C1000, BIOL G220, BIOL G225, BIOL G210, and ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000E. COREQUISITE: NURS G160. ADVISORY: NURS G131. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Perform foundational psychomotor skills safely.
  2. Implement nursing care plans using the nursing process for clients in the clinical setting.
  3. Compare and contrast normal and abnormal assessment findings.
  4. Apply theory knowledge to interpret and manage human responses to actual or potential health problems.
  5. Utilize therapeutic communication with family, interprofessional team members, and clients.

Course Objectives

  • Organize a basic head-to-toe physical assessment using evidence-based practice.
  • Design patient education to meet health maintenance/promotion needs across the lifespan.
  • Reference procedure and skills rubrics prior to performing foundational psychomotor skills.
  • Utilize the nursing process while organizing data to provide evidence-based care, adhering to HIPAA and professionalism.
  • Identify normal baseline assessments versus deviations to recognize potential health problems and promote quality care.
  • Research actions, dosages, side effects, and nursing implications of medications prior to safely administering them in the presence of a faculty member.
  • Determine differences in providing care for patients from diverse cultural groups.
  • Formulate an SBAR report and communicate it to members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate basic bedside care (handwashing, PPE, bed linen changes with proper body mechanics, patient hygiene).
  • Incorporate informatics and technology, including navigating electronic health records, to provide patient care.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication to promote a therapeutic nurse–client relationship.
  • Analyze information obtained during clinical preparation while referencing the medical record.
  • Apply universal precautions while safely handling sharps.
  • Create and maintain a safe environment while performing select fundamental skills (e.g., obtaining a blood glucose reading).
  • Apply theoretical content to nursing care in the clinical setting.
  • Implement evidence-based care plans reflecting legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse.

Lab Content

  1. Clinical evaluation tool: used to evaluate students' performance during healthcare and community experiences.
