Course Description
This course focuses on care of the healthy individual across the lifespan to meet physical and psychosocial health needs. Students will learn how to safely perform foundational nursing clinical skills, including physical assessment and safe medication administration. The nursing process will be utilized as the framework for patient-centered nursing care. Concept-based curriculum provides the structure of the curriculum and is threaded throughout the course. Practice in the college laboratory and clinical experience in acute health care and/or community settings is required. Permission is required to enroll in the course. PREREQUISITE: PSYC G118, COMM C1000, BIOL G220, BIOL G225, BIOL G210, and ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000E. COREQUISITE: NURS G160. ADVISORY: NURS G131. Transfer Credit: CSU.

- Perform foundational psychomotor skills safely.
- Develop and implement nursing care plans using the nursing process for clients in the clinical setting.

- Apply theory knowledge to interpret and manage human responses of patients to their actual or potential health problems.

Course Objectives
- 1. Organize a basic head-to-toe physical assessment using evidence-based practice.
- 2. Plan for patient education to meet health maintenance/promotion needs to individuals across the lifespan.
- 3. Reference procedure and skills rubrics prior to the performance of foundational psychomotor skills.
- 4. Apply the nursing process while organizing data and information to provide evidence-based care to a client while adhering to HIPPA and professionalism.
- 5. Identify normal baseline assessments from deviations and abnormal findings for identification of potential health problems to promote quality care.
- 6. Research the actions, dosages, side effects, and nursing implications of medications prior to safely administering them in the presence of a faculty member.
- 7. Discuss differences in providing care for patients from diverse cultural groups.
- 8. Formulate a SBAR report for clients and communicate it with members of the healthcare team.
- 9. Demonstrate basic bedside care, including hand washing, donning PPE, changing bed linens while maintaining proper body mechanics, and providing hygiene care to patients.
- 10. Incorporate the use of informatics and technology, including navigating electronic health records, to provide patient care.
- 11. Use verbal and nonverbal communication to promote a therapeutic nurse-client relationship.
- 12. Examine and gather information during clinical prep while referencing the medical record.
- 13. Apply universal precautions while safely handling sharps equipment.
- 14. Create and maintain a safe environment while performing select fundamental skills such as obtaining a blood glucose reading.
- 15. Apply theoretical content to the nursing care of the client in a clinical setting.
- 16. Implement evidence-based care plans that reflect an understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities of the nurse.

Clinical evaluation tool: used to evaluate students performance during healthcare and community experiences. Healthcare and community experiences: students experience hands-on activities weekly. Human Patient Simulation (HPS): simulated scenarios enhance learning through directly relating theory to the clinical setting in an interactive environment. Nursing Education Simulation Technology (NEST) Center Practice and demonstrate competency in nursing skills. Skills: Perform psychomotor skills and/or interventions for improved patient outcomes based on evidence-based practice. Evaluated through the use of a skills rubric. Nursing science/clinical practice: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
