Course Description

Formerly: HIT G103. This course teaches principles of word building to develop the extensive medical vocabulary used in the healthcare environment. It includes the origin, root forms, suffixes, prefixes of medical terms, and an example of non-medical/layperson's usage for each term. It provides instruction in basic medical terminology from an anatomical approach and by each body system. Transfer Credit: CSU. C-ID: HIT 103X.C-ID: HIT 103X.

  4. Apply guidelines when analyzing and building medical diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical terms using word components, prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Use word components to enunciate, spell, define, and utilize medical terms used for symptoms, therapeutic, operative, and diagnostic testing in the medical field.
  • 2. State the etymology of medical terms.
  • 3. Recall introductory word banks of prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms and their respective meanings.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking will be accomplished using interactive practice assignments of anatomical visuals, body system list, and case scenarios with laymen terms that will be replaced by medical terms.

Skills demonstration is supported by online learning resources such as body spectrum electronic anatomy, medical animation labeling, terminology triage game, word search term building, and Hear-it/Say-it/Spell it exercises.

Eligible Disciplines

Nursing science/clinical practice: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
