Course Description

This course is a piano class for students who have completed three semesters of college level piano classes or the equivalent. Content includes development of essential piano skills, such as reading music at the keyboard, sight reading, playing by ear, and chromatic keyboard harmony in more advanced forms. Regular daily practice is essential for success in this course. Access to piano lab and practice rooms is available for no fee. ADVISORY: MUS G241. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

  2. Perform intermediate classical, folk, or popular compositions with appropriate balance, phrasing, dynamics, and style.
  3. Play all major and minor scales, hands together, followed by arpeggios in the same keys, hands separately, for two octaves.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Learn intermediate level music from notation.
  • 2. Sight read music somewhat easier than (1).
  • 3. Play some pop tunes and folk song arrangements by ear.
  • 4. Play all major and minor scales at a moderate tempo in parallel motion, duple rhythm.
  • 5. Play basic chord patterns in all major and minor keys, both primary and secondary progressions.
  • 6. Harmonize and transpose.

Lecture Content

1. Performance with technical accuracy and expressive understanding prepared pieces of intermediate difficulty. 2. Performance at sight piano pieces approximately one grade less difficult than the above. 3. Improvisation of keyboard arrangements of single-line melodies using various and other accompaniment patterns, making use of secondary dominants and seventh chords as appropriate, and adding supplementary notes in the right hand. 4. Playing of all major and minor scales with both hands in parallel motion at moderate tempo. 5. Playing of basic cadence formulas, hands together, in all major and minor keys, projecting these formulas into common accompaniment patterns and broken chord patterns.

Writing Assignments

Keyboard-playing skills, note reading, and playing by ear at the keyboard. Playing from lead sheet charts as outlined in I and II above.

Out-of-class Assignments

Concert attendance (required):  A written critique, program and ticket stub should be submitted.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Reading music by analyzing note patterns and musical sturctures. Application of principles of music interpretation to pieces being learned. Creation of keyboard arrangements of melodies by ear from known melodies and from lead sheets.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Keyboard-playing skills, note reading, and playing by ear at the keyboard. Playing from lead sheet charts as outlined in I and II above.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
