Course Description
This course is designed for the student who is new to the collegiate band experience, but has had previous successful experiences performing on their chosen instrument. Introduction and implementation of wind band ensemble and performance skills including rehearsal etiquette, rehearsal techniques, individual practice skills, section performance skills, and musical interpretation. PREREQUISITE: Audition. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate an introductory collegiate level of technical proficiency on a chosen instrument.

- 4. Accurately utilize live performance skills and practices with introductory facility to perform a variety of musical styles for diverse audiences.

Lecture Content
Musical Performance Interpretation of Wind Band Literature Introduction to Intonation Correct tone production and relative intonation on the students individual instrument. Matching of intonation and tone quality within a section of the ensemble. Matching of intonation and tone quality within the ensemble as a whole. Introduction to Rhythm Accurate and precise reading and interpretation of rhythms and meters in printed music. Accurate performance of rhythms and meters within an instrumental section. Accurate performance of rhythms and meters within the instrumental ensemble. Accurately following the conductor for pulse, meter, and rhythmic interpretation in context of the ensemble. Introduction to Articulation Correct visual interpretation and musical performance techniques of articulation markings in printed music. Accurately matching articulation style within the context of the instrumental section. Accurately matching articulation style within the context of the instrumental ensemble. Introduction to Expression Correct visual interpretation and musical performance of expression markings on the printed music. Correct musical interpretation and performance of emotional expression through interaction with the conductor. Accurately following the conductors musical interpretation of literature within the context of the section and ensemble. Introduction to Ensemble Performance Skills Accurate utilization of wind band rehearsal and performance practices. Standards and practices of professionalism as a musician with rehearsal and performance: attendance, promptness, deportment, and participation. Musical preparedness for rehearsal and performances. < Accurate performance practices for standard wind band literature. Accurate performance practices of solo passages within the context of wind band literature. Accurate utilization of listening and performance skills to achieve proper section and ensemble blend and balance including modulation of volume, tone, and pitch.
Lab Content
Introduction to Practical Performance Skills Perform the individual part within the section and ensemble as directed by the conductor. Perform the correct pitches as indicated on the printed music with correct tone and accurate intonation. Perform the individual part with the articulation, phrasing, and expression as directed by the conductor. Perform the individual part with appropriate balance and blend of the section and ensemble. Perform with stylistic appropriateness to the period/style of the composition being rehearsed or performed. Perform at a skill level appropriate to the literature performed by the ensemble. Perform solos correctly as assigned and applicable to the literature. Memorize performance repertoire as needed and directed. Adhere to professional level rehearsal and performance standards of conduct.

Instructional Techniques
Lecture and interactive performance activities. Guided musical rehearsal as determined by the instructor.
Reading Assignments
Explore and research the historical significance and muscial structure of specific musical selections being performed in the ensemble.
Writing Assignments
Write a short paragraph describing the challenges of a particular musical passage and various methods to successfully solve any issues presented by the passage.
Out-of-class Assignments
Independent preparation and practice of assigned musical passages to maintain and improve a high level of musical performance competence.
Demonstration of Critical Thinking
Planning and executing a succsessful individual musical practice session covering the music being rehearsed in wind symhony. This practice session would include improvement of specific musical passages, developing stronger characteristic tone production and overall intonation, and refining production of specific articulation skills. Development of a greater understanding of the wind band literature being studied during the semester.
Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration
Researching and implementing correct performance practices of the ensembles musical literature, both for ensemble and solo passages.
Eligible Disciplines
Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
Other Resources
1. Musical literature selections will vary from semester to semester and are determined by the instrumentation of the ensemble. Standard wind band literature from the Baroque through contemporary musical stylistic periods will be utilized to develop the students musical and ensemble skills.
