Course Description

A large choral group singing music in all styles. Open to beginning through advanced singers with an emphasis in the development of vocal technique and music reading. This course may be taken 4 times. PREREQUISITE: Audition. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: MUS 180. C-ID: MUS 180.

  2. Utilize aural and visual musical skills to discern quality choral and vocal literature from a variety of historical and cultural areas.
  3. Obtain the skills necessary to continue to improve vocal technique both within and outside the classroom setting, including breath control, intonation, expression and phrasing, intonantion, and articulation.
  4. Develop music reading skills on an individual and ensemble basis with note and rhythm accuracy, articulation, dynamics, and terminology.
  5. Apply fundamental performance skills and concert etiquette, including time management, performance practices, intonation, balance, blend, articulation, expression, and sense of ensemble.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Develop an appreciation of good choral music in a variety of styles.
  • 2. Improve his/her vocal technique, including accuracy of pitch and rhythm, intonation, articulation, and expression.
  • 3. Improve his/her music reading skills including accurate interpretation of notes and rhythms, terminology, and musical expression.
  • 4. Learn fundamental performance skills and concert etiquette, including ensemble blend and balance, intonation, and ensemble membership accountability.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.

1. Uniform dress is required for performances.  Those who need help with cost can apply for assistance from choir funds through the Financial Aids Office.  Generally, women can make their own dresses, men will wear tuxedos purchased second-hand at reduced rates. Readings provided by department.
