Course Description

A class to develop skills in sightreading advanced melodies and rhythms, including chromatic alterations, non-standard intervals, and harmonic progressions, and irregular and mixed meters. This course includes computer-assisted instruction and self-paced learning. Students should have advanced music-reading skills. The skill level will be validated during the first week of class by the instructor with a successful audition. ADVISORY: MUS A274 and Basic music-reading skills; Students must have a knowledge of key signatures and scales. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Sight-sing any and all parts of an advanced Bach chorale.
  2. Clap and conduct rhythms of mixed meter at sight.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Sight sing a melody with chromatic alterations in all major keys.
  • 2. Sight sing a melody in the harmonic, melodic, and natural minors.
  • 3. Sight sing in all modes.
  • 4. Demonstrate conducting patterns in simple and compound time while singing.

Lecture Content

Rhythmic Clap and conduct quarter, eight notes and sixteenth notes in irregular and mixed meter Two-part rhythmic exercises with mixed and irregular meters. Melodic Sight sing diatonic exercises with chromatic modulations. Sight sing and conduct melodies with chromatic alterations. Sing two-part exercises from the Kodaly Bicinia  Sing Modes dorian phrygian lydian mixolydian aeolian locian   These exercises of increasing difficulty are practiced in and outside of class until the conclusion of the semester.

Two hours of in-class perfomance of rhymic and melodic studies.

Students will perform musical notation.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
