Course Description
Designed for the serious music student who seeks more extensive awareness in technical facility, musical literature, musicianship and self-discipline. PREREQUISITE: MUS A149 or audition. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Perform in public by memory a classical composition of at least 4 minutes in length.
- Evaluate various fingering possibilities as they relate to phrasing and performance, incorporating elements of free stroke and rest stroke differentiation.
- Differentiate between stylistic differences relating to the performance of classical music including 20th Century music and Spanish music.
- Demonstrate the ability to follow a conductor as a section leader.
Course Objectives
- 1. Demonstrate classical guitar technique, arpeggio, free stroke, rest stroke.
- 2. Develop skills for classical guitar ensemble performance as section leader.
- 3. Develop skills in sight reading on the classical guitar up to the 5th to the 12th position.
- 4. Memorize medium length pieces of music (over 4 minutes in length) in multiple parts.
- 5. Perform works of classical guitar repertoire in their entirety by memory.
- 6. Increase and improve the dexterity of the right hand through the use of arpeggiated chordal studies and repertoire.
- 7. Possess a performance repertoire from at least three classical music eras.
- 8. Utilize the rasqueado strumming technique.
