Course Description

This course is for advanced voice students who have completed Advanced Vocal Performance 3 or have received instructor approval. Songs in English and other languages, with an emphasis on musical theater repertoire, performance techniques, and stage deportment. Daily practice is required. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Sing memorized solos from advanced repertoire class in English, a third language (such as German, and French) and a native language with a range suitable to their voice type and correctly evaluate vocal styles of fellow students. Opera arias and advanced musical theatre repertoire to be included.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Continue study of opera arias to include French and German operas in addition to Italian
  • 2. Continue study of musical theatre producing small vignettes.
  • 3. Work in collaboration with other students to produce duets, trios, and minor scenes.
  • 4. Prepare songs suitable for university audition.

Lab Content

Master-class-style workshopping of in-class performances, with emphasis on:   * Exploring advanced repertoire with excellent vocal technique, intonation, support, musicianship, accuracy, rhythm, etc.* Interpreting and expressing text in English and other languages with nuance, context, and precise diction* Creating and portraying increasingly complex characters; making informed choices about how to present particular characters* Collaborating with pianists, duet/ensemble partners, and instrumentalists* Taking and incorporating notes from a director; managing creative differences* Giving critique and notes to performers and scene partners* Discussing DEI issues in the musical theater/opera world and how they impact performance choices* Preparing songs and scenes for performance with input from/collaboration with instructor/director, pianist, and scene partners

Writing Assignments

Students must demonstrate proficiency in performing a variety of vocal music to the instructors satisfaction to complete the course.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will need to spend at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week practicing vocalizations and assigned songs (approximately 2.5 hours per week). It is suggested that they dedicate some time each week listening to other vocal artists, analyzing their style and song repertoire. A variety of different artistic styles should be studied.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
