Course Description

A class to develop skill in sightreading rhythm and melodies. Students will learn to perform melodic and rhythmic musical phrases at sight. This course includes computer-assisted aural learning. Students should have basic music-reading skills, including knowledge of key signatures and scales. Transfer Credit: CSU. ADVISORY: Basic music-reading skills; Students must have a knowledge of key signatures and scales.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Sight-sing a four-part Bach chorale.
  2. Clap rhythms from standard choral and instrumental literature at sight.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Sight sing a diatonic melody.
  • 2. Sight sing a pentatonic melody
  • 3. Sight sing a melody in the harmonic minor.
  • 4. Sing all intervals.
  • 5. Clap rhythms using basic 16th notes, dotted rhythms and syncope rhythms.
  • 6. Demonstrate conducting patterns in simple and compound time.

Lecture Content

Rhythmic Time signatures including irregular meter Quarter, eight notes and sixteenth notes Performance of rhythmic exercises including the mixed meter.  Two-part rhythmic exercises Melodic Singing simple intervals Sight sing pentatonic exercises Sight sing diatonic exercises Sight sing melodies with chromatic alterations Sing two-part exercises Sing canons        These exercises of increasing difficulty are practiced in and outside of class until the conclusion of the semester.

In-class perfomance of rhymic and melodic studies.

Out-of-class Assignments

Two hours of practice of assigned exercises per week. Exercises may be taken from Pentatonic Melodies and Diatonic Melodies (published by Masterworks Press and Rhythmic Studies) or similar resources.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Periodic performance testing.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will perform musical notation.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
