Course Description

A class to develop skill in sightreading basic melodies and rhythms. Students will learn to perform basic melodic and rhythmic musical phrases at sight. This course includes computer-assisted instruction and self-paced learning. Students should have basic music-reading skills, including knowledge of key signatures and scales. ADVISORY: Basic music-reading skills; Students must have a knowledge of key signatures and scales. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Sight-sing a penta-tonic melody.
  2. Clap rhythms from Kodaly basic rhythm: syncopa, dotted and sixteenth notes.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Sight sing a pentatonic melody
  • 2. Clap rhythms using basic sixteenth notes, dotted rhythms and syncopa rhythms.

Lecture Content

Basic Kodaly Rhythmic Patterns Syncopa Dotted Sixteenth Two-part rhythmic exercises Melodic Singing simple intervals Sight sing pentatonic exercises Sing two-part exercises Sing canons        These exercises of increasing difficulty are practiced in and outside of class until the conclusion of the semester.

In-class perfomance of rhymic and melodic studies.

Out-of-class Assignments

Four hours of practice of assigned exercises per week. Exercises may be taken from Pentatonic Melodies and Diatonic Melodies (published by Masterworks Press and Rhythmic Studies) or similar resources.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Periodic performance testing.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will perform musical notation.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Masters degree in music OR bachelors degree in music AND masters degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
