Course Description

Continuation of Studio Guitar 1. Group instruction in studio guitar techniques including styles such as jazz, rock, and other popular genres. Emphasis on picking technique, notes reading in positions, scales, chords, music theory, sight reading, solo and ensemble performance. ADVISORY: MUS A151 or successful audition. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Aurally differentiate between performed musical styles and identify them.
  2. Discriminate between different musical styles taken from a simple lead sheet and perform a bossa and a ballad correctly.
  3. Perform a minimum of two pieces of the jazz guitar repertoire in their entirety by memory both by 'comping' and single-note soloing.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate the fundamentals of movable scale fingerings as they relate to the guitar.
  • 2. Demonstrate the fundamentals of movable 7th chord fingerings as they relate to the guitar.
  • 3. Develop practice techniques to overcome technical problems with the left hand.
  • 4. Demonstrate the ability to sight read a simple lead sheet that includes 7th chords.
