Course Description

A select vocal ensemble which performs suitable music from all historical periods. Extensive participation in concerts on and off campus. Occasional brief section rehearsals. Schedule of performances announced at the beginning of each semester. This course may be taken four times. Studio/Arranged Studio. PREREQUISITE: Successful audition; this prerequisite will be validated in class during the first week of the course. Transfer Credit: CSU. C-ID: MUS 180.C-ID: MUS 180.

  1. Identify and diagnose challenges in choral literature related to pitch, vocal production, and language and interpretation.
  2. Perform in public concerts as a member of the ensemble

Course Objectives

  • 1. Develop and improve vocal skills through singing advanced choral literature with emphasis on tone production, diction, and interpretation.
  • 2. Achieve performance standards for concert and festival participations.
  • 3. Appreciate many styles of choral music through rehearsal and performance of traditional, classical, folk, and contemporary works.
  • 4. Develop and improve the basic qualities of musicianship in each individual music reading, intonation, and awareness of style.
  • 5. Exhibit personal growth through participation in committee and social activities and government of chorus as an activity outside of class.

Students will perform a minimum of two different major concerts per semester.

Class preparation and sectionals.

Class participation and attendance, class performance of course literature, and attendance at and participation in a choral concert.

Eligible Disciplines

Music: Master's degree in music OR bachelor's degree in music AND master's degree in humanities OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
