Course Description

Fundamentals of guitar, music and musicianship. Music notation, terminology, scales, key signatures and time signatures. Basic guitar chords, rhythms and fingering techniques. Beginning level classical, folk and popular guitar literature. ADVISORY: Students provide their own acoustic nylon or steel-string guitar. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Perform in public a short composition for solo guitar (one minute minimum) with stylistic accuracy.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to sightread a short two-part composition in the first position.
  3. Analyze technical difficulties in music and formulate exercises to overcome them.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Perform a composition from a lead sheet.
  • 2. Explain important musical and technical terms used in guitar music.
  • 3. Identify the differences between important styles of music and perform various styles accurately.
  • 4. Overcome performance anxiety through careful preparation and rehearsals.
  • 5. Perform with other students.
  • 6. Apply good practice techniques in overcoming technical difficulties and learning new repertoire.
  • 7. Demonstrate techniques for improving sight reading skills.
  • 8. Demonstrate guitar tuning techniques.
