Course Description

This regular course incorporates lecture and hands-on instruction to teach the beginning older adult piano student basic orientation of the instrument, notes, and rhythm. Older adults will experience the therapeutic value of playing an instrument and expanding their knowledge of musical elements, resulting in improved physical and emotional well-being. Students will have the opportunity to play in class. An electronic keyboard or piano at home is recommended. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

Intro to playing piano with a focus on mobility and flexibility challenges faced by older adults Posture Hand position Finger numbers High and low sounds Note value of whole notes Half notes, quarter notes Musical alphabet and location of notes on the keyboard Intervals or 2nds, 3rds Finger exercises to aid the mobility of older adults Orientation to written music and the staff Grand staff Bass and treble clef Time signature Recognize C and G penta scales on the staff Identification and reinforcement of basic musicianship from the manuscript to the keys of the keyboard Note names Note values Rests names Rest values

Instructional Techniques

Short lecture followed by student practice with individualized instruction to support older adults with positive reinforcement and development of problem-solving skills as class resolves issues collectively. Demonstration by the instructor and/or guest performers to aid with retention of information presented Immediate application of demonstrated skills by older adults at the piano to aid with retention.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

The instructor will conduct an auditory evaluation of student application of techniques, skills, and knowledge learned in class to support motor refinement and hand, eye coordination, dexterity, agility, and mental focus and flexibility through student demonstrations. The instructor will conduct individual student review to evaluate changes in self-reported emotional and physical health, communication skills and social interactions
