Course Description

This course introduces warehousing operations including the processes, procedures, tools, and equipment within a warehouse facility. Effective and strategic warehousing operations enable an efficient, effective, and comprehensive supply chain. Key elements of this course include: an overview of warehousing, the role of warehousing in the supply chain, facility configuration, storage and handling techniques, performance metrics, customer service considerations, and safety concerns across various types of distribution facilities, including Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) guidelines. This course will explore the requirements for warehousing operations ranging from a simple, single storage facility to a total distribution or fulfillment network. This course prepares students to successfully pass the Warehousing Operations certification examination. Some of the content for this course was developed by the Leveraging, Integrating, Networking, Coordinating Supplies (LINCS) in Supply Chain Management Consortium. Credentials are awarded by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives

• 1. Explain the differences between a physical warehouse and warehouse operations.
• 2. Recognize the various types of warehouses.
• 3. Analyze value-added roles of warehouses.
• 4. Understand the detailed steps of receiving goods and materials.
• 5. Compare factors that favor fixed location systems and random location systems.
• 6. Interpret the key metrics used to measure picking, packing, and packaging performance.
• 7. Recognize activities to process customer orders for outbound shipments.
• 8. Describe the differences between a static warehouse and a distribution/fulfillment center.
• 9. Understand OSHA standards to protect employees from workplace hazards.

Instructional Techniques

This course may be taught using multiple methods of support including classroom, video, audio, multi-media, and online strategies. Instructors utilize learning strategies, including lectures; cooperative learning groups; written homework assignments; self-paced independent study using textbooks, video lessons, audio segments, computer software, or online systems; demonstrations or discussions; presentations by students to software or online systems; presentations by students to the instructor or for class presentation; research projects; journals; and various types of assessment by quiz and exam, including open-ended, close-ended, multiple-choice, and essay.

Students may read assigned online content, textbooks, periodicals, and will participate in class discussions.

Writing Assignments

Written Critical Thinking assignments and/or projects.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will be required to do research for homework and critical thinking writing assignments. Students may give individual or group presentations.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Midterm and Final Exam essay questions that evaluate students ability to formulate arguments to plausible scenarios.A written (3-5 page) critical thinking analysis related to course material or as workbook supplements for students to analyze warehouse operations. Primary/secondary research, presentation, organization, and online data search/manipulation may be included.
