Course Description

This course provides instructor-guided preparation related to classroom-based learning at a maritime related work site. This course is designed as a supplement to the supervised internship course for the Professional Mariner student. COREQUISITE: MARA A200. Transfer Credit: CSU.

1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will possess work experience in a marine-related field.

Course Objectives

• 1. Conduct search for appropriate internship site related to education and career goals.
• 2. Interview in a professional manner at an internship site.
• 3. Write measurable learning objectives appropriate to the field site.
• 4. Summarize accomplishment of learning objectives and effectiveness of internship site and program.
• 5. Maintain a record of internship experiences and time.
• 6. Identify employability skills related to individual field sites.
• 7. Develop a resource directory of the employees, vendors, and services used at the field site.
• 8. Write a reflective summary for each field site objective.
• 9. Research company culture and determine appropriate conduct.

Lecture Content

Career search skills Research three companies related to career goal through library, placement center, online job sites, interviews, and/or professional publications On-site interviewing Conduct successful interview at internship site Appropriate dress and grooming Complete the following: application, cover letter, resume, references Write clear and measurable learning objectives related to personal and internship needs.  Each objective will include: An explanation of how it relates to the workplace and personal growth. A quantitative method for evaluation.  Completion date for evaluation. Objectives will be based on the following: Personal Objectives Critical thinking objectives Subject matter objectives Employment skills: Appropriate dress Safety skills Completing work scheduled by employer Timeliness and Time Management Communication / human relations Create a presentation including the following: Analysis of learning objectives Identification and comparison of knowledge and skills prior and post internship An evaluation by the employer A written summary of the presentation. Attend an introductory meeting with the instructor and completion of all assignments.

Online company research, to include company culture, appropriate behaviour, and company products and services.

Writing Assignments

Students will write measurable objectives for an internsip site experience and a reflective paper assessing the outcomes at the end of the course. Students will compile a directory of company employees, vendors,Students will and services.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will earch in-person and online for internship opportunities. They will schedule and attend employer interviews.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Participate in class discussion and other interactive classroom work. Use theory to support writing assignments. Research, collect, and organize information culiminating in a multimedia presentation evaluatating the internship. Evaluate the presentations of others through discussion and specific feedback.   Present a professional portfolio which can be used in a maritime industry.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Quizzes and examinations. Problem solving exercises will include written comprehensive responses. Cognitive responses to classroom lecture and demonstration will be required. Proficiency demonstration of applied skills demonstrating evaluation and critique techniques. Read and complete all necessary coursework.

Eligible Disciplines

Marine diving technology: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Marine engine technology: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Ship and boat building and repair: Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
