Course Description

A supervised internship related to classroom-based learning at a maritime related work site. This course is designed as a supervised internship course for the Professional Mariner student. The student will gain experience in a marine related position that bridges classroom based learning with career goals. This 120-hour unpaid or 150-hour paid work experience course is designed to assist students to acquire career awareness, work habits, attitudes and skills for the professional mariner program. Credit for occupational work experience may be accrued at the rate of one to 8 units per semester for a total of sixteen units. Additionally, this course is for 2 units and students must work 75 paid hours or 60 non-paid hours per unit earned. PREREQUISITE: MARA A150, MARA A151, MARA A152, MARA A153, or MARA A155. COREQUISITE: MARA A201. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Search appropriate marine and education related business for an appropriate internship site which will forward the students career goals.
  • 2. Create a professional, working resume.
  • 3. Interview at internship site with consideration to attire and the cultural norms of the business.
  • 4. Follow employment policies of internship site.
  • 5. Write a minimum of three clear and measurable learning objectives.
  • 6. Maintain a record of employee time at the internship business.
  • 7. Identify skills obtained that relate to being employed in the maritime industry.
  • 8. Interview at internship site with consideration to attire and the cultural norms of the business.
  • 9. Follow employment policies of the internship site.

Lecture Content

Career search skills Research three companies related to career goal through library, placement center, online job sites, interviews, and/or professional publications On-site interviewing Conduct successful interview at internship site Appropriate dress and grooming Complete the following: application, cover letter, resume, references Write clear and measurable learning objectives related to personal and internship needs. Each objective will include: An explanation of how it relates to the workplace and personal growth. A quantitative method for evaluation.  Completion date for evaluation. Objectives will be based on the following: Personal Objectives Critical thinking objectives Subject matter objectives Employment skills: Appropriate dress Safety skills Completing work scheduled by employer Timeliness and Time Management Communication / human relations Create a presentation including the following: Analysis of learning objectives Identification and comparison of knowledge and skills prior and post internship An evaluation by the employer A written summary of the presentation. Attend an introductory meeting with the instructor and completion of all assignments.

Instructional Techniques

Lecture, handouts, case studies, group participation, video demonstration, discussion, student projects, computer modules, skill simulations, and field trips.

Reading Assignments

Research maritime businesses in local area through publications and internet searches. Research job specifications via maritime publications.

Writing Assignments

Writing assignments will include short essays to assess progresssion of general knowledge. Course appropriate projects relating direcly to the internship. Participation in discussions relating to online lectures and specific assigned topics.   Written evaluation of skills gained through the internship, including critiques of ability to translate new skills to hiring advantage once intership is concluded.   Access and develop internhsip plan based on industry knowledge, and courses taken at OCC or other public or private institution relating to maritime industry. Interactive computer demonstration of Power Point presentation skills. Examinations consisting of fill-in, multiple choice and/or short essay. All quizzes and examinations will be at least 75% comprehensive responses. Proficiency demonstration of applied skills demonstrating evaluation and critiques techniques.

Out-of-class Assignments

Develop objectives and goals with employer. Review of objectives with employer half way through the course. Complete minimum of 120 hours of work experience.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Participate in class discussion and other interactive classroom work. Use theory to support writing assignments. Research, collect, and organize information culiminating in a multimedia presentation evaluatating the internship. Evaluate the presentations of others through discussion and specific feedback.   Present a professional portfolio which can be used in a maritime industry.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Quizzes and examinations. Problem solving exercises will include written comprehensive responses. Cognitive responses to classroom lecture and demonstration will be required. Proficiency demonstration of applied skills demonstrating evaluation and critique techniques. Read and complete all necessary coursework.

Eligible Disciplines

Marine diving technology: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Marine engine technology: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. Ship and boat building and repair: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
