Course Description

Students will learn about marine industry careers, maritime terminology, types of vessels and vessel protocol. Job skills and career paths for the marine industry are covered. Personal conduct, customer service skills, resume writing and interviewing skills are included to improve employment opportunities. This is a required course of the Professional Mariner Program. A facility fee will be charged for field trips. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Locate job opportunities, produce a completed job application and demonstrate interview skills.
  2. Follow correct use of nautical terminology, illustrate examples of vessel protocol, diagram marine career paths and explain chain of command in a ship's crew.
  3. Display professional deportment and practice exemplary personal conduct with crew and passengers.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Explain the responsibilities and importance of each member of the crew.
  • 2. Identify career paths.
  • 3. Cite USCG licenses and documents and explain when required.
  • 4. Explain the effects of alcohol or drug use. List state and federal regulations regarding drugs and alcohol.
  • 5. Identify vessel types.
  • 6. Prepare for and assist a simulated USCG inspection.
  • 7. Illustrate vessel protocol.
  • I Taking the course two times enhances skills by supervised repetition and practice.
