Course Description
Supervised clinical medical assisting experience in a medical office, clinic, or related outpatient facility. PREREQUISITE: MA A181. Transfer Credit: CSU.
Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)
- Perform entry level clinical-medical assisting skills under supervision in a medical office, clinic, or related outpatient facility.
Course Objectives
- 1. Accurately perform mensuration and vital signs in preparation for patient examination.
- 2. Demonstrate industry standards related to assisting the physician with routine and specialty exams.
- 3. Demonstrate Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.
- 4. Demonstrate ethical and legal protocol related to the employee, employer and patient.
- 5. Perform medical assisting skills according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
- 6. Accurately prepare patient, instrumentation and treatment area for minor surgical procedures.
- 7. Demonstrate competency in assisting the physician during surgical procedures and post-operative care.
- 8. Prepare and administer pharmaceutical agents.
- 9. Perform diagnostic electrocardiography and pulmonary function screening per industry standards.
- 10. Perform CLIA approved laboratory testing following the principals of quality assiurance, quality control and safety.
- 11. Maintain patient records in accordance to current industry protocol.
- 12. Demonstrate patient intake, effective communication and patient scheduling.
- 13. Demonstrate accurate performance in billing procedures and financial record keeping.
Lecture Content
This course will integrate knowledge and skills learned in Allied Health A111 and A115, Medical Assisting A175, A150 and A. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking necessary to perform pertinent skills in a clinical medical office or clinic setting.
Lab Content
This course will integrate knowledge and skills learned in Allied Health A111 and A115, Medical Assisting MA 150, MA 175 ad MA 181. Emphasis will be placed on critical thinking necessary to perform pertinent skills in a clinical medical office or clinic setting.

Eligible Disciplines
Nursing: Masters degree in nursing OR bachelors degree in nursing AND masters degree in health education or health science OR the equivalent OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher. Masters degree required. Nursing science/clinical practice: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
