Course Description

This course is designed to provide strategies for life, academic, and employment success for those who struggle with logical thinking (left hemisphere). Students preparing to enroll in academic courses where writing and reading skills are necessary to succeed at Orange Coast College can benefit from this special assistance course through the DSPS office. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. PREREQUISITE: Instructor permission. Not Transferable.

1. Assess self-reported evaluation/interview at the beginning and end of the course to determine mastery levels in at least 2 areas initially identified as areas of improvement.
2. Follow individualized course plan as determined by initial evaluation.

Course Objectives

• 1. Develop life and academic skills necessary to successfully complete academic courses.
• 2. Students with learning challenges will benefit from specialized instructional approaches used with students who learn differently or at a slower pace due to disability(ies).
• 3. Understand the disability and its limitations in order to determine appropriate adaptive technologies based on disability.

Lecture Content

Based on the DSP evaluation of the student and the plan developed, the DSPS instructor shall determine the extent of needs for each student to successfully adopt strategies that can assist the student with course completion and life skills necessary for employment. 1. Life skillsa. Study skillsb. Time managementc. Coping skillsd. Test-taking skillse. Advocacy Skillsf. Organizational skillsg. Understanding the disability and its limitationsh. Assist students with expressive and communication skills that affect their behaviors towards others.i. Determine appropriate adaptive technologies based on disabilityj. Specialized tutoring based on level and disability 2. Integrate academic life skills learned at the beginning of the course to assist with mastering the following:a. Avoid memory overload.b. Assign manageable amounts of work as skills are learned.c. Build retention by providing review within a day or two of the initial learning of difficult skills.d. Provide supervised practice to prevent students from practicing misconceptions and "misrules."e. Make new learning meaningful by relating practice of sub-skills to the performance of the whole task.f. Reduce processing demands by pre-reviewing component skills of algorithms and strategies.g. Use visual and auditory examples.h. Teach spelling skillsi. Practice on receptive and processing skillsj. Encourage sentence constructionk. Provide editing and revision instructionl. Instructional Techniques

Employ Universal Design (UDL) approach to consider diverse learning styles. The course content will include embedded tutoring to reinforce concepts covered in class, exercises, videos, computer-assisted instruction and individual instruction.

Reading Assignments

Students will spend approximately one to two hours per week on assigned readings.

Writing Assignments

Students will spend approximately one to two hours per week completing writing assignments. Assignments will be created by the DSPS instructor using software hardware, textbook material, and assignments, as needed to meet the goals and objectives of this COR.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will spend approximately 4 hours per week on assigned readings, practicing strategies, using tools and aides, as needed based on their own individualized plan.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Achievement tests and daily assignments completed.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Post-evaluation created by the DSPS Instructor- students must demonstrate mastery of at least 2 areas of improvement identified in their individualized plan. Attendance will also be a determining factor to pass the course.

Learning assistance instructors: Minimum qualifications for these faculty members are specified in title 5, section 53415. Masters degree required.
