Course Description

Provides individualized remedial instruction to students with learning disabilities. The program is designed to help a student improve the basic academic skills of reading, spelling, writing and arithmetic. This is an open entry/open exit course. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. PREREQUISITE: Completion of the California Community College Learning Disabilities Assessment. Not Transferable.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Recognize the language of mathematics, including the vocabulary, terminologies, and symbols.
  2. Recognize introduced phonological patterns.
  3. Identify the meaning of words by using the dictionary and contextual clues in passages.
  4. Recognize the main idea, details, and conclusion in a passage.
  5. Identify introduced phonological and structural patterns of words as well as pertinent sight words.
  6. Recognize their own trouble spots and acquire the necessary skills to correct them.
  7. Recognize most of the introduced grammatical structure and paragraph construction guidelines.
  8. Acquire mathematics concepts, computational skills, and study skills required for college-level math courses.
  9. Use a dictionary to assist them with correct spelling.
  10. 10. Identify the parts of speech and their usage in writing complete sentences.
  11. 11.Organize sentences into a sequential and logical paragraph with sentence variety and appropriate transitions.

  • I. 3. Increase their reading comprehension skills in terms of literal, critical and inferential thinking.

  • I. 5. Develop study skills in textbook reading, note-taking and test-taking.
  • II Writing
  • II. 1. Improve their ability to write simple and compound sentences.
  • II. 2. Write a paragraph containing a topic sentence, several supporting details and a clincher sentence.
  • II. 3. Use appropriate punctuation and capitalization.
  • III Spelling
  • III. 1. Develop their ability to spell words correctly, through the knowledge of phonics, structural analysis, rules, memorization and dictionary skills.
  • IV Arithmetic
  • IV. 1. Improve their ability to perform the basic computational skills of additions, subtraction, multiplication and division.
  • IV. 2. Increase their ability to solve problems using fractions, decimals, percents and proportions.
  • IV. 3. Increase their ability to solve arithmetic problems involving personal and consumer skills through the use of calculators.
