Course Description

Beginning course designed to develop students’ fundamental ability to both comprehend and converse in daily spoken Italian for tourism. The course emphasizes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and introduces basic aspects of the cultural life in Italy. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not transferable.

  1. Speak and understand basic conversational Italian through active use of the language for tourism and hospitality.
  2. Recognize and compare important features of Italian society.

Course Objectives

  • I Increasing critical thinking and global awareness of various cultural differences between Italian speaking countries and United States.
  • I. 1. Demonstrate oral/aural or written competency in Italian at the elementary level for tourism and hospitality at A1 - A2 European framework.

Lecture Content

I.  Vocabulary salutation, greetings, forms of addressing. Regular verb“Parlare” and irregular verbs “Essere” and “Stare” II. Days of the week, expressing time, months and dates. cardinal numbers. Verb “Avere” III. Food ordering and shopping – verbs “Mangiare, Prendere, Aprire, and Preferire” IV. Family and relatives, nationalities – and irregular verb “Andare “ V.  Places, Cities, Hotel, Bank, Museum, Travel   VI. The telephone and reservations by technology “Communicare” VII. Verbs Present indicative tense VIII. Auxiliary verbs Essere or Avere. IX. Modal verbs and verb phrases "Volere, Potere, Dovere."  X. Nouns Singular and plural Masculine and Feminine XI. Nouns and noun phrases XII.  Miscellaneous Pronouns Subject XIII. Direct Object Pronouns XIIII. Adjectives Gender and number agreement XV. Possessive adjectives XVI. Adverbs XVII. Prepositions Pronunciatios XVIII. Culture, Art, Music, and Traditions. XVIIII. Equivalent grammatical material but with Non-Credit - ITAL C180-enriched by cultural, and hospitality topic for 1 ITAL Basic Italian for Tourism and hospitality industry. XX. Twenty Italian regions and major cities with language and Regional Dialects.

Instructional Techniques

A variety of activities, OER textbook in CANVAS with self grading and self assessment. (asynchronous lectures employing current technology and/or handouts, video and/or audio presentations, pair and group work in discussion when appropriate) will be employed. Intensive and extensive listening and reading in the target language is directed toward raising learners awareness of the lexical nature of language. Activities will be structured to enable the learners to comprehend lexical phrases as idiomatic expressions scaffolding "chunks" and to use whole phrases without necessarily having to analyze their constituent parts.

Reading Assignments

Reading module assignments each week and written speaking oral production in Audio Video format and pair share feedback. Examples of posting, reading and answering to student discussion. Reading and analyzing assignment on non-verbal communication among the Italian-speaking cultures. Italian-speaking countries whose first or second language is Italian.

Writing Assignments

Examples of assignments (very limited at this level of language acquisition). Research and write a short paragraph on an Italian-speaking country. Short presentation and self prepared written Dialogue with another student or with help of the professor. Brief personal introduction in Italian on the topic given in class.

Out-of-class Assignments

Examples of assignments. Reading and listening comprehension activities with the matching activiteis in Canvas. Lab assignments to practice vocabulary and grammar concepts independently and submit the work with the results in the end of the semester for extra practice. Research difference in dialects among the Italian-speaking countries (Italian as 1st or 2nd language).

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Activities which require learners to become more active and questioning critical thinkers such as group work, project-based work and presentations which involve comparing and contrasting; Roll-playing in Italian, classifying; evaluating; cause and effect; ranking; identifying right from wrong and facts from opinion; and summarizing will be employed.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Oral presentations Role-Play in pairs or small group.

Eligible Disciplines

Foreign languages: Masters degree in the language being taught OR bachelors degree in the language being taught AND masters degree in another language or linguistics OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
