Course Description

A drafting course emphasizing the legal nature and scope of construction drawings, specifications, codes, products, materials, and equipment used for interior design projects. PREREQUISITE: ID A110 and ID A130 or concurrent enrollment. ADVISORY: ID A215. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Communicate the technical requirements of a project through a combination of written and graphic formats, producing a comprehensive set of industry-standard working drawings for use by Designers, Architects, Engineers, Contractors, and clients.

Course Objectives

• 1. Demonstrate mastery of drafting skills and use of tools and equipment.
• 2. Understand the relationship and organization of working drawings.
• 3. Arrange and prepare all required project drawings and information into a complete set of working drawings.
• 4. Understand how to prepare drawings as the primary designer and as a consultant to an Architect.
• 5. Recognize the level of detail required for coordination with Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing and Structural Engineers.
• 6. Communicate the type of information coordination required to submit drawings to the building department for the plan check process.
• 7. Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose, content and relationship of construction documents by completing worksheets and written tests and quizzes.

Instructional Techniques

Lecture, demonstration, laboratory, critique (instructor/student), multi-media, research, and student presentation.

Reading Assignments

Students will be expected to complete reading assignments from the required text, printed hand-outs, library resources, and research online articles throughout the course. 1 hour/week

Writing Assignments

Produce a detailed set of construction drawings including cover sheet, site plan, construction plan, reflected ceiling plan, power communication plan, wall and floor finish plans, furniture plan, interior elevations, sections and details.  (16 hours outside of lab time) Prepare written instructions, notes, schedules specifications to be included in a set of contract documents.  (4 hours outside of lab time)

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will perform additional research and complete a series of presentations and projects throughout the course. Out of Class assignments are used to improve skills and knowledge to be applied to projects and assignments.  Weekly reading assignments 1/hour week Revision of lab assignments/projects 1 hour/week Create portfolio of semester work 1/2 hour week Preparation for quizzes 1/2 hour/week

Eligible Disciplines

Interior design: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
