Course Description

The historical relationship between the decorative arts, period furniture, and interior architecture is illustrated in this overview of design heritage. This course begins with 16th century England and America and analyzes the influences and changes in design to the present. Style development as it relates to social, economic, and political forces is emphasized. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Identify and define interior design terminology, motifs, and influences that relate to the decorative arts, period furniture, and interior architecture during the 19th and 20th century in Europe, and the 17th through 21st centuries in America.
  2. Analyze and critique the historical, social, political, and economic influences of the various historical periods that affect Interior Design.
  3. Compare and contrast the decorative arts, period furniture and interior architectural contributions of contemporary designers.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Explain the major historical, political, economic, and social influences that affected design in England from the 16th century through the 19th century.
  • 2. Analyze the characteristics of each of the historic design periods in England from an interior architecture, decorative arts and furnishings standpoint.
  • 3. Describe how cultural heritage from the Pacific Rim and Atlantic Rim have affected design choices in American interiors.
  • 4. Analyze major historical, economic, political, and social influences that affected American interior design from the 17th century to the present.
  • 5. Identify each of the major historic design periods in America from the 17th Century to the present and key characteristics of the furnishings, decorative arts, and interiors.
  • 6. Identify contemporary designers and their major contributions.

(approx. 8 hour assignment .5 hr/week) Testing for recognition and understanding of historical influences and stylistic changes in design. (2 hours/week)

Eligible Disciplines

Interior design: Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
