Course Description

Analysis, application and evaluation of products and materials used in interior design. Includes interior textiles, furnishings, and finish materials and products. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Identify the types of interior materials and products available for the built environment and common installation methods.
2. Determine materials, resources and products based on end user needs specific to functional, aesthetic and maintenance requirements that are safe for the environment, health and welfare of the general public.
3. Prepare written specifications and graphic depictions of interior furnishings and finish materials and their intended use.

Course Objectives

• 1. Analyze and specify interior furnishings, finish materials and products taking into consideration functional, aesthetic, and maintenance needs.
• 2. Research resources and identify market centers and distribution channels for interior furnishings, finish materials, and products.
• 3. Evaluate interior textiles for fiber, yarn structure, fabrication, dye/print methods and finishes for application in interior spaces.
• 4. Evaluate interior textile products and their relationship to safety, maintenance and environmental factors.
• 5. Identify testing methods and standards used to determine code compliance for interior furnishings, finish materials, and products.
• 6. Analyze characteristics of materials used in construction of interior furnishings.
• 7. Write specifications for interior furnishings, finish materials, and products.
• 8. Identify installation criteria for interior and architectural materials.
• 9. Communicate thoughts, ideas, and information in oral and written form.
• 10. Research materials and resources for interior furnishings and finish materials which are safe for the environment and health and welfare of the general public.

Prepare and organize a comprehensive specification notebook including product information sheets, finish legends and representative product and material samples for a mixed use interior design project. 3. Produce a physical or digital material/finish board based on the specifications included in the comprehensive specification notebook. 4. Write a report along with a visual presentation for a professional case study project analyzing the material and product choices culminating in a verbal presentation to the class.
