Course Description

This introductory course in design communication techniques will emphasize the importance of visual communication and three-dimensional design graphics for two-dimensional media. Course content will include subject matter and technique presentations in hand-drawn graphics. Design communications shall include orthographic projections, paralines, plan views, elevations, sections, basic perspective drawing, rendering and tonal value applications. Included in this coursework will be introductory applications of 3-D software as well integration with hand drawings. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives

• 1. Apply design composition and presentation skills for use within appropriate graphic conventions.
• 2. Develop drawing skills for manual design communication through the use of multiple drawing techniques.
• 3. Understand use of appropriate principles for communicating design solutions.
• 4. Select and apply the correct drawing type for expressing design features and characteristics.
• 5. Apply best types of graphic composition and drawing formats as used in the profession of Interior Design.
• 6. Select most appropriate applications of line weight, line type, and tonal characteristics for drawn illustrations.
• 7. Understand and utilize tonal values and graphical imagery for representing realistic drawn renditions.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students are assessed on their analysis and application of subject matter knowledge, drawing techniques, principles/drawing conventions, as applicaple from assignments and other study activities.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students are assessed on drawings and presentation materials by instructor via verbal and written assignments.A limited quantity of written exercises and responses for quizzes, as well as freehand sketch activites may be applied to class content as commensurate with course objectives. (Quizzes and related activites will focus upon terminology, methodologies, and processes related to course content.)Student oral presentation opportunites shall be provided. These activites will focus upon verbal text and graphic presentations relevant to the development of professional skills.Students will be assessed on in-class participation and interaction.
