Course Description

This course examines the political, social, and theoretical perspectives of diverse populations as they relate to health and social services settings. The impact of health status, lifestyle and behavioral patterns, communication styles, socioeconomic status, personal prejudices, ethnic stereotyping, and cultural beliefs on individual and group access to health and social services will be investigated. Emphasis is placed on developing effective strategies to use with diverse populations as well as evaluating the effectiveness of existing health and social service programs. Enrollment Limitation: HLTH C104; students who complete HSVC C106 may not enroll in or receive credit for HLTH C104. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Understand the impact of culture on health and social services, including how cultural factors influence access to care, communication with diverse populations, and the provision of culturally sensitive services.
  2. Engage effectively with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds, including the ability to recognize and address cultural biases, adapt communication and service delivery, and demonstrate respect for cultural diversity in a professional context.
  3. Develop culturally competent intervention strategies, policies, and programs to improve the overall quality of care and support for diverse populations.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Define relevant terms including culture, race, ethnicity, minority groups, diversity, socioeconomic status, racism, prejudice, stereotyping, and cultural competence.
  • 2. Identify characteristics and common health and social service needs of diverse population groups.
  • 3. Explain theoretical perspectives relating to how diverse population groups are approached and treated in health and social service settings, and the impact on health outcomes.
  • 4. Analyze political and social issues relating to diverse population groups in health and social service settings.
  • 5. Identify beliefs, communication styles, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle and behavioral patterns of various cultures and social groups, and how they impact access to health and social services.
  • 6. Evaluate existing health and social service program strategies for treating diverse populations, concentrating on the most effective strategies that have evidence-based results.
  • 7. Examine both explicit and subtle dynamics of racism, prejudice, and stereotyping, and describe how they impact health and social service policies, utilization, interactions, and health outcomes.
  • 8. Assess ones own cultural perspective, personal attitudes, assumptions, and stereotypes, and the potential impact of these on personal and professional interactions.
  • 9. Recommend appropriate prevention, intervention, treatment, and empowerment and advocacy strategies in providing health and social services to diverse populations.
  • 10. Demonstrate cultural competence practices including critical thinking and problem-solving skills when working with diverse populations.

Instructional Techniques

A variety of instructional techniques will be employed to encompass different student learning styles.  These may include, but are not limited to, lecture, discussion, and small-group activities.  Instruction will be supplemented, where appropriate, by PowerPoint presentations and electronic resources and technologies.

Reading Assignments

Textbook and research article readings supplemented by ancillary web resources.

Writing Assignments

Students will complete a written assignments and discussion board posts to apply concepts related to cultural competency.

Out-of-class Assignments

Outside of the classroom, students will do the required reading, study for quizzes and exams, and conduct research, where applicable, to prepare papers, essays and/or assessment plans.

Ethnic studies: Masters degree in the ethnic studies field OR a masters degree in American studies/ethnicity, Latino studies, La Raza Studies, Central American studies, Latin American studies, cross cultural studies, race and ethnic relations, Asian-American studies, or African-American studies OR the equivalent OR see interdisciplinary studies. Masters degree required. Health: Masters degree in health science, health education, biology, nursing, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, dietetics, or nutrition OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in public health, or any biological science OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Psychology: Masters degree in psychology OR bachelors degree in psychology AND masters degree in counseling, sociology, statistics, neuroscience, or social work OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Sociology: Masters degree in sociology OR bachelors degree in sociology AND masters degree in anthropology, any ethnic studies, social work, or psychology OR the equivalent.
