Course Description

Design and preparation of landscape planting plans. Emphasis on ecological and aesthetic considerations. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Demonstrate correct use of plants by preparing landscape planting plans.
  2. Differentiate and select plants as design materials.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Realize the importance of growth habits and eventual sizes of plant choices made.
  • 2. Assess a property and analyze various site considerations.
  • 3. Discuss the various uses for plants relating to desired effects, site considerations, and different design styles.
  • 4. Prepare a landscape planting plan.
  • 5. Discuss and defend their work through the critique process.

Lecture Content

Trees, shrubs, ground covers, annuals, and their specific attributes and proven uses Climate, soil requirements, exposure, site requirements  Plants creating different effects; tropical, desert, woodland How plants look/work together; texture, form, color, continuity, contrast, drama, balance, terracing with plants Design functional considerations; Formal, informal effects, future maintenance considerations, plant utility; problem solving with plants Planting Plans; methods; Sources, plant lists, labeling, material cost, size specifications
