Course Description
Habits of growth, culture, propagation, and use in landscape design for Southern California. Identification will be emphasized. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC: Credit Limitation: HORT A181 and HORT A182 combined: maximum credit, 1 course.

- Identify common ornamental shrubs of Southern California and correctly spell the botanical, common, and family name.
- Discuss characteristics of common shrubs of Southern California and recommend an appropriate shrub for a specific landscape situation or climatic condition.
Course Objectives
- 1. Identify the common shrubs of Southern California by field inspection.
- 2. Identify the common shrubs of Southern California from a leaf, flower or fruit sample.
- 3. Identify common characteristics to a family or genus
- 4. Identify characteristics unique to a specific species
- 5. Correctly spell the family, botanical name, common name and synonym of common shrubs of Southern California.
- 6. Recommend an appropriate shrub to a given landscape situation.
- 7. Recognize good and poor cultural practices relating to ornamental shrub care
- 8. Use appropriate terminology when referring shrubs and their parts

Ornamental shrubs: Landscape terminology Plant classification and identification References re ornamental shrubs Specific plant groups: Flowering shrubs, low maintenance shrubs, sound barrier plants, outdoor foliage shrubs, ferns, acid loving shrubs, bromeliads Cacti and succulents Native California shrubs Conifers and other evergreen gymnosperms Bonsai plants Roses Ground covers and vines For each plant discussed in respective plant groups, the following will be emphasized: Common name, scientific name, and family Care and maintenance Landscape uses and faults

Lectures illustrated with powerpoint /slides, demonstrations by the instructor, and interaction between students and instructor during lab sessions before class, in office hours, and by E mail. Guided tours and observing specimens.
