Course Description

Maintenance of residential and small commercial landscapes to include: small tree and shrub trimming, all aspects of lawn care, soil amending, fertilizing, sprinkler adjustments, watering, pest inspections, and scheduling. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Prioritize various landscape maintenance tasks and safely use the appropriate equipment to perform that task.
  2. Use knowledge of water management and specific tree, shrub, vine and turf needs to design and schedule an efficient landscape management plan.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Apply knowledge of the Landscape maintenance industry.
  • 2. Describe the importance of proper tree skills.
  • 3. Describe turf cultivars and specific needs.
  • 4. Recognize landscape maintenance needs, methods, and tasks.
  • 5. Prioritize and schedule various maintenance tasks.
  • 6. Explain equipment, tools, and their uses.
  • 7. Demonstrate knowledge of what is best for long-term landscape success.
  • 8. Discuss the importance of competent water management.
  • 9. Discuss the importance of good client relations in landscape maintenance.

Lecture Content

Small tree trimming basics Trimming shrubs for natural appearance, trimming roses, hedges, vine tying Planting color; bedding plants, pots Maintenance equipment and its uses Soil amending; cultivating, types of soil amendments, mulches  Mowing and edging lawns Aeration, de-thatching, over-seeding, and sod repairs.  Pest inspections and monitoring methods Irrigation systems, maintenance,  repairs, troubleshooting  Developing a watering schedule Task scheduling; frequency and timing of various maintenance objectives Client relations Fertilizing; types, methods of application, timing Designing a maintenance proposal
