Course Description

This noncredit course is designed for older adults interested in learning more about healthy aging. This course provides students with practical skills and information about healthy aging and cover topics such as diet, nutrition, disease prevention, fall prevention, and application of principles to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Examine the impact of nutrition and physical activity on the aging process.
  2. Identify the factors that optimize successful aging.
  3. Analyze nutrition and the influences it has on prevention of chronic disease and overall health.

Course Objectives

  • Describe the benefits of health choices as they relate to disease prevention.
  • Identify the factors that optimize successful aging.
  • Analyze nutrition and the influences it has on prevention of chronic disease and overall health.

Lecture Content

  1. Introduction to health during aging process.
    1. The relationship between well, balanced activity (both brain and body) and health
    2. Good nutrition, and preventative care.
  2. Predictors of successful and unsuccessful aging
    1. Avoiding disease and disability.
    2. Optimizing, cognitive and physical function.
  3. Stages of exercise and their importance.
    1. Developing a daily exercise routine.
    2. Warm-up strength, endurance, heart rate, monitoring, and cool down.
  4. Changes experienced while aging and how they can be affected through the application of nutrition, exercise, and healthy life habits.
    1. Emotional/social factors that can affect the health of older adults.
    2. Bones, muscle muscles, and joints.
    3. Brain and nervous system systems.
  5. Potential interactions of specific foods and medication’s common to older adult
    1. How activity can positively affect chronic illness (such as diabetes, high, blood pressure, etc.)
    2. The effects of alcohol and caffeine.

Lab Content

  1. Movement and physical activity.

      1. Improve heart and lung function: support, stamina, and energy.

    1. Maintain or improve muscle function and metabolism.

  • Kinesiology: Master's degree in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in any life science, dance physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy OR the equivalent.
  • Health: Master’s degree in health science, health education, biology, nursing, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, dietetics, or nutrition OR bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in public health, or any biological science OR the equivalent. Master's degree required.
