Course Description

Development of the French language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Extensive exposure to the cultures related to the French language through authentic materials and group discussions on a variety of topics ranging from current events to global issues. Emphasis on cross-cultural understanding. Transfer Credit: CSU.

  1. Communicate in French in a variety of social situations.
  2. Express in writing and/or orally feelings and opinions on a variety of topics.
  3. Analyze a variety of texts dealing with a broader spectrum of both French and American cultures.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Develop oral, reading, and writing skills by carefully planned communicative activities.
  • 2. Use the French language in a creative way.
  • 3. Produce sentences, not limited to familiar memorized material.
  • 4. Communicate in survival situations.
  • 5. Narrate using correct verb tenses.
  • 6. Identify current issues, historical figures and artistic events.
  • 7. Respond appropriately in social situations.
  • 8. Formulate travel plans and arrangements.
  • 9. Compare values in American and French cultures.
  • 10. Summarize assigned literature that represents various aspects of French culture.

Lecture Content

1. Vocabulary and grammatical structures will be reviewed and expanded. These language structures will be present and  practiced in contextualized activities.2. The following grammatical structures will be reviewed and practiced: A. Present, past, future tenses. B. Pronominal verbs C. Pronouns D. Use of prepositions E. Adjectives, adverbs  F. Conditional G.
