Course Description

Explore the principles, theory, and mechanics of a digital audio workstation (DAW) Pro Tools. Emphasis will be on proficiency in Pro Tools culminating in the Avid Certified User: Pro Tools certification exam. Successful completion of this exam will give the student an Avid Certified User Pro Tools credential. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Formulate and implement Pro Tools concepts and principles, covering a strategy from organization to project mixdown and archiving.
  2. Demonstrate proper use of software in line with industry standards.
  3. Obtain technical proficiency within software to successfully complete certification exam.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Creating sessions, recording and importing audio and MIDI.
  • 2. Editing session media, navigating sessions and arranging media on tracks.
  • 3. Use basic processing and mixing techniques to finalize a production
  • 4. Accomplish common audio production tasks.
  • 5. Analyze and interpret session file structures.
  • 6. Create appropriate Pro Tools software and hardware settings.
  • 7. Set up and modify input/output (I/O) settings.
  • 8. Apply clip-based editing techniques to audio and MIDI tracks.
  • 9. Incorporate automated mixing techniques into a Pro Tools workflow for selective during a session post-production tasks automation.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving through the creation of their audio projects, adjusting segments, rearranging tracks, determining a variety effects and mixing techniques.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Proficiency will be demonstrated by satisfactorily completing project assignments and passing the skills test as well as the final exam.

Eligible Disciplines

Broadcasting technology (film making/video, media production, radio/TV): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
