Course Description

The creative design of garments through draping techniques emphasizing fabric manipulation and design creation. PREREQUISITE: FASH A180 or FASH A183. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

  1. Demonstrate draping skills based on garment draping techniques.
  2. Utilize draping principles, fit techniques, and fabric selection to design, construct, and present draped projects.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Demonstrate, through a series of weekly problems; basic draping skills.
  • 2. Design and construct garments using draping techniques- demonstrate knowledge of draping principles and fabric selection.
  • 3. Oral presentation of the steps involved in draping Final project.
  • 4. Present knowledge of draping principles in a Final Exam which may includes T/F, multiple choice, and short answer questions.

Instructional Techniques

Lecture and demonstration related to the procees of the draping method of pattern making and how to complete various patterning techniques. Laboratory for the completing of draping method exercises and projects.

Reading Assignments

Students will read assigned chapters in the textbook. 2-3 hours per week.

Writing Assignments

Students provide a written self-evaluation of their final project; and may be asked to provide written responses to short-answer essay questions on midterm and final exam. 1-2 hours per week.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will research examples of draping, and practice draping skills. 2-3 hours per week.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will utilize draping skills to design and construct  garments. They will critique draped garments after each instructor demonstration and through the process 1-2 hours per week.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will provide written responses to short-answer essay questions on exams. They will demonstrate problem-solving when draping several parts of a garment, and when using non-textile products. They will present and model on a dress form their draping projects, and describe the steps involved.  1-2 hours per week.

Eligible Disciplines

Family and consumer and studies/home economics: Masters degree in family and consumer studies, life management/home economics, or home economics education OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, gerontology, fashion, clothing and textiles, housing/interior design, foods/nutrition, or dietetics and food administration OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Fashion and related technologies (merchandising, design, production): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
