Course Description

The student will construct a lined, tailored jacket using traditional and speed tailoring techniques; 48 basic clothing construction techniques will be featured. PREREQUISITE: FASH A180 or FASH A183. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Objectives

• 1. Select, buy, and use appropriate fabrics, pattern, notions, and sewing equipment.
• 2. Utilize basic tailoring methods in a logical sequence of construction.
• 3. Competently complete specific techniques as indicated for a properly constructed garment based on the selected pattern.
• 4. Construct a lined, tailored jacket with set-in sleeves, patch, welt or double piped pockets, with a closed front and notched or shawl collar style.

Reading Assignments

Students will read assigned chapters in the textbook. 1-2 hours per week.

Writing Assignments

Students will write garment evaluations, and provide written responses to short-answer essay questions on midterm and final exams. 1 hour per week.

Out-of-class Assignments

Students will research tailored garments and appropriate fabrics, and will  learn and practice construction skills for the required 48 basic construction techniques notebook. 1-2 hours per week.

Demonstration of Critical Thinking

Students will utilize basic tailoring methods in a logical sequence of construction.They will determine the specific techniques needed for the pattern, fabric, and design of the garment.

Required Writing, Problem Solving, Skills Demonstration

Students will provide written garment evaluations, will will provide written responses to short-answer essay questions on midterm and final exams. Students will demonstrate skills by creating a notebook of 48 techniques examples.

Eligible Disciplines

Family and consumer and studies/home economics: Masters degree in family and consumer studies, life management/home economics, or home economics education OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, gerontology, fashion, clothing and textiles, housing/interior design, foods/nutrition, or dietetics and food administration OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Fashion and related technologies (merchandising, design, production): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
