Course Description

This course is an introduction to basic clothing construction. Students will learn basic clothing construction techniques, terminology, pattern layout, measuring and cutting, and complete multiple easy-to-sew projects. Transfer Credit: CSU.

Course Level Student Learning Outcome(s)

1. Analyze and evaluate multiple completed garments, identifying techniques used and design details.
2. Utilize knowledge of fabrics, patterns and notions to construct multiple garments.
3. Identify and perform basic garment construction processes, selecting and using the appropriate sewing tools and individual areas of improvement.

Course Objectives

• 1. Perform basic construction processes including darts, seam types, seam finishes, hem edge finishes, and hand sewing stitches.
• 2. Identify design details in ready to wear garments.
• 3. Using sewing and garment terminology, describe the appropriate purpose of the basic construction techniques and apply those techniques to a sewn project.
• 4. Identify select patterns, fabrics, and notions which are suitable to wearer, to occasion, and for the desired overall appearance.
• 5. Discriminately select and use the sewing tools: cutting tools, sewing machine, measuring and marking devices, and pressing equipment.
• 6. Construct multiple garments using techniques appropriate to the fabric, design of the garment and its intended use. Evaluate completed garments and state techniques that need improvement.
• 7. Perform pattern layout, measuring, understanding of grain, and yield to basic sewing techniques and simple garments.
