Course Description

A laboratory-based course to improve clothing construction skills. Students work independently according to a study plan they devise and complete, under the supervision of the course instructor. Includes periodic student-teacher conferences, completion of individualized lab assignments, and a final self-assessment report. Enrollment is open all semester. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Formulate learning objectives for independent projects and practice self-assessment as it relates to techniques in apparel production.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Formulate learning objectives.
  • 2. Practice self-assessment and basic skills abilities in clothing construction.
  • 3. Complete a minimal number of required exercises, assignments, self-evaluation charts, and final progress report.
  • 4. Demonstrate techniques as they relate to apparel construction.
  • 5. Use appropriate learning resources such as handbooks, pattern books, lab manuals, technique notebooks, computer programs, and student-teacher conferences.
  • 6. Identify needed tools and equipment.
  • 7. Safely operate the sewing machine and an industrial serger.

Eligible Disciplines

Family and consumer and studies/home economics: Masters degree in family and consumer studies, life management/home economics, or home economics education OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in child development, early childhood education, human development, gerontology, fashion, clothing and textiles, housing/interior design, foods/nutrition, or dietetics and food administration OR the equivalent. Masters degree required. Fashion and related technologies (merchandising, design, production): Any bachelors degree and two years of professional experience, or any associate degree and six years of professional experience.
