Course Description
Read, analyze, and write on important American literary works from the early 20th century to the present. Explore the historical, cultural, philosophical, and aesthetic implications of representative works. Formulate and produce written analyses of assigned works. Enrollment Limitation: ENGL A151H; students who complete ENGL A151 may not enroll in or receive credit for ENGL A151H. Lecture. PREREQUISITE: Enrollment requires appropriate placement or eligibility for Freshman Composition. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC. C-ID: ENGL 135.C-ID: ENGL 135.

- Identify significant historical, philosophical, cultural, and aesthetic influences of American literature 1865-Present.
Course Objectives
- 1. Read and demonstrate an understanding of major authors, works, genres and themes of of American literature from 1865-Present.
- 2. Analyze and interpret the philosophical, cultural, mythic, intellectual, social, religious, and/or historical elements that are represented in American literature from 1865-Present.
- 3. Recognize and interpret the literary devices and writing styles evident in individual texts of American literature from 1865-Present. Distinguish how these elements represent an individual authors aesthetic sensibility and larger context of the period.
- 4. Relate the literary works of the American literature from 1865-Present to the historical, philosophical, social, political,and aesthetic context.
- 5. Demonstrate understanding of appropriate academic discourse and the conventions of critical literary analysis
- 6. Demonstrate comprehension of the above through class discussion, written exams, and essays using appropriate citation form.
Lecture Content
Influential and significant, as well as diverse and under-represented, texts and authors, such as but not limited to Whitman, Twain, Chopin, Faulkner, Hughes, Eliot, McCullers, Plath, Vonnegut, and Roth. Evolution of literary traditions, contexts, and genres, such as but not limited to poetry, fiction and drama Contexts of American literature, including historicall and politcailly significant events (Reconstruction, WWI, the Depression and the post-1950s cultural clashes, for example), philosophical movements originating from such events, and aesthetic movements (such as, but not limited to realism, modernism and post-modernism) Reading, analyzing, interpreting and writing about American literature from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present, including diverse voices from a variety of ethnic and cultural groups, such as Native American writers, WWI expatriate writers, writers from the Harlem Renaissance and writers from the post-1950s counter-cultural movement.

Instructional Techniques
Instructional techniques involve some or all of the following: lecture/discussion, in-class writing prompts, peer feedback, close reading, group work, panel discussions, debates, response papers, quizzes, collaborative research presentations, demonstrations, conferencing (individual and small group), multiple draft assignments, and instruction in revision and editing.
Reading Assignments
A minimum of two hours per week reading, analyzing, and annotating representative works of American Literature 1865- Present.
Writing Assignments
Write a minimum of 3000 words (15 pages, 12 pt. double spaced typed) about American literature 1865-Present: (a) a minimum of 2000 words (10 pages) of the writing must be in the form of analytical essays, (b) the other writings may be in the form of tests requiring primarily short and/or long essay responses, journal writings, creative modeling of the literature, written notes outlining oral presentations, or other types of writings that demonstrate an understanding of the literature.
Out-of-class Assignments
A minimum of between 4-6 hours each week on writing assignments--including (but not limited to) essays, summaries, reading responses, research essays using secondary sources and take-home exams.

Eligible Disciplines
English: Masters degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR bachelors degree in any of the above AND masters degree in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism OR the equivalent. Masters degree required.
