Course Description

This course will guide students to read works of literature, written in the English language and in translation. Focusing on a single text, short series, or a limited group of related texts, this class will help students learn the methodologies of close reading and analysis to become more avid, savvy readers of texts of all kinds. This noncredit course is an optional support course; it is not a prerequisite for any other English course. This noncredit course can be paired with another English noncredit course for a certificate of competency. Noncredit. NOT DEGREE APPLICABLE. Not Transferable.

  1. Analyze significant historical, philosophical, cultural, and aesthetic implications of representative works of literature.

Course Objectives

  • 1. Learn to read closely in order to recognize and interpret the literary devices and writing styles evident in literary texts.
  • 2. Appreciate how these elements make each work a representation of an individual author's artistic sensibility, of a particular set of circumstances, and/or of a larger group of literature.
  • 3. Communicate observations about, interpretations of, and reactions to a literary text.

Canonical and non-canonical works of literature (novels, short story collections, poem collections) written in the English language and in translation Context Author's life and works Historical period Relevant literary movements Genre conventions . Literary Analysis Tools for close, critical reading: literary devices, writing styles, observations and inferences Interpretive frameworks and theoretical perspectives Discussion strategies for communicating textual meaning Identifying and citing textual evidence Explaining implications Generating and supporting interpretive claims
